Abstract    The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism(ESPEN)officially published a guideline on nutrition in the intensive care unit(ICU)in September 2023, which is a revision based on the previous 2019 guideline. For the purpose of optimizing the current nutrition therapy in ICU, this guideline summarized 56 recommendations and 3 statements, to update the strategy of the timing, route, dose, and composition of nutrition support. The energy and nutrient requirements of critically ill patients differ from those of general patients. The optimal timing, appropriate routes, dosages, and compositions for implementing nutritional support therapy in critically ill patients have been a challenging aspect of clinical practice in recent years and a focal point for future research. The 2023 ESPEN (European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism) guidelines on nutrition for critically ill patients hold significant implications for the clinical application of nutritional therapy in this population. Furthermore, they contribute to guiding the standardization and research development of nutritional therapy for critically ill patients in China.
