Abstract The perioperative transfusion could save patients’ lives, and accelerate postoperative recovery. Component therapy including red blood cells, plasmas, platelets, and cryoprecipitate has become the accepted standard of care in transfusion medicine, which could save blood resources. U.S. army, however, used warm fresh whole blood in oversea wars, which was proved to be associated with the improved outcomes in critically ill patients. As a result, perioperative transfusion should be based on exact requirements of each patient,to choose between whole blood or component therapy.
