Abstract With the progress of surgical and anaesthetic management, more and more operations in patients with a high-risk of perioperative liver failure can be performed successfully. Damage of liver function is one of severe complications in surgical patients in perioperative period. Surgical trauma, anesthetic medicines, stress, severe infections and other causes of liver damage should be avoided during operation. Close monitoring and prompt treatment perioperatively are vital to protecting patients from liver damage. Pre-existing liver diseases, preoperative liver function should be assessed comprehensively. Measures should be taken to improve the blood clotting function, nutrition status and to control infection to minimize perioperative liver insults.
