Abstract Hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia is the second most common benign liver tumor after hepatic hemangioma. The rapid developments in imaging technology have allowed more accurate diagnoses without the need for biopsy or resection. Although there have been lots of research about focal nodular hyperplasia, and the disease has been divided into several subtypes, the development of the pathogenesis and natural history is not clear entirely. Hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign non-progressing lesions, and its main clinical strategy is observation closely. However, due to the difficult identifications between hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatic adenoma or primary liver cancer, the clinical management has no uniform standards and the indication of surgical intervention is not clear. Therefore, the high quality evidences of evidence-based medicine are still need to support the clinical management, not only to avoid blind operation, but also to avoid the misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.
