Abstract Objective To analyze the surgical therapeutic effect and prognosis influencing factors of primary retroperitoneal tumors(PRPTs). Methods The clinical data of 200 cases of primary retroperitoneal tumor admitted between 1991 and 2005 in Shanghai Cancer Center, Fudan University were analyzed retrospectively. Results Two hundreds cases of retroperitoneal tumor were diagnosed finally by surgery and pathology including 158 cases of malignant and 42 cases of benign. Complete resection rate of malignant retroperitoneal tumor was 64.5%, and combined organ resection rate was 33.5%. The 5-years survival rate of malignant retroperitoneal tumor performed complete resection was 69.3%, and the 5-years survival rate of partial resection was 21.5% (P<0.05). Conclusion Complete preoperative examination can improve the complete resection rate of tumors. Complete resection is the only effective method for the treatment of PRPTs, and it is one of the major factors in reducing recurrence.
