Abstract    Fatal pulmonary embolism(PE) induced by deep venous thrombosis(DVT) is threatening the health of people in china. In present, anticoagulation therapy is the main method to treat DVT in current practice. However, some patients with DVT still have the risk of fatal PE in spite of regular anticoagulation. The implantation of inferior vena cave filters is an effective way to prevent fatal PE after DVT. Permanent filters were firstly used in clinical practice to prevent PE, but the increasing risk of complication of thrombosis after implantation limits the wider application of permanent filters. In recent years, with the appearance of temporary and retrievable filters, the indication of filter implication is becoming wider than before because these two kinds of filters are more suitable for the patients with temporary contraindications of anticoagulation. The clinicians should make personal selections of filters according to the conditions fo different individuals and evaluating results of the risk PE.
