Abstract At the end of 2009, 15 major research advances of the year are listed by American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Three of them are related to gastrointestinal tumors, including the targeted therapy and genetic testing. Today, as the hot issue of clinical concern, surgeons should have a clear understanding despite the 20-years history of clinical application and its benefit had been reported. Targeted therapy is still unable to take the place of chemotherapy or any other of traditional treatment. Especially as the most important treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, the position of surgery is unshakeable.
