Abstract    Objective    To evaluate therapeutic results of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding for the patients of obesity with type 2 diabetes. Methods    The clinical data of 21 patients of obesity with type 2 diabetes who underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding between 2005 and 2007 at Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of Tianjin Nankai Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. Preoperative and postoperative weight, body mass index, fast blood glucose of the patients were compared and analyzed statistically. Results    The operations were successful without severe perioperative complications. After one-year follow-up,the average weight of the patients declined from 106.7 (±13.8) kg to 93.8(±10.6)kg,with body mass index declined from 37.2 (±3.6)  to 32.4 (±2.1),with an average fast blood glucose declined from 8.60 (±2.1) mmol/L to 7.80(±2.2)mmol/L. The body weight of the patients declined obviously, but the diabetes didn’t relieve obviously. After two-year follow-up,the average weight was 85.2 (±11.8) kg,with body mass index declined to 29.4 (± 2.8). The diabetes were relieved effectively, with an average fast blood glucose declined to 5.86 (±1.7) mmol/L. Conclusion    Two-year follow-up demonstrates that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is an effective procedure with an average declining of weight 20.1%, diabetes relieved rate 76% and low complications for the patients of obesity with type 2 diabetes.
