Drug therapy of gastrointestinal bleeding ZHAN Xian-bao. Department of Gastroenterology, Changhai Hospital, the Second Military Medical University, Shanghai 200433, China
Abstract Drugs are the basic therapy of gastrointestinal bleeding. Somatostatin and its analogues, or vasopressin and its analogues combined with nitrates can be chosen for the management of esophagogastric variceal bleeding, while proton pump inhibitors are the first choice for treating nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The etiologies of lower gastrointestinal bleeding vary greatly, which determines the choice of drugs.
