Abstract Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is uncommon in clinical practice. But it brought a renovation in successful molecular targeted therapy which inspires novel investigations in other tumor entities. As a lately recognized type of tumor, GIST is under heated researches. Clinical practice guidelines of GIST have been revised at least twice a year by National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). More experiences and clinical data have been reported in more than a decade, and more variations in the pathogenesis and clinical outcome of the tumor have been noticed. It seems that a time calling for personalized therapy of GIST has come, based on researches of related mutation status and the efficacy of targeted therapy, the role of minimally invasive surgery in GIST and combined surgery and targeted therapy in advanced GIST.
