Abstract Objective To compare the surgical outcome and investigate the clinical value between vertical-banded gastroplasty and gastric bypass for obesity. Methods It searched related databases and identified randomized controlled trials of vertical-banded gastroplasty versus gastric bypass for obesity. The quality of the included studies was evaluated by Handbook recommend standard. Data were analyzed by RevMan 5.0 from the Cochrane Collaboration. Results Four randomized controlled trials were included, and the baseline data of each trial were comparable. Meta-analysis showed that gastric bypass had better effectiveness than vertical-banded gastroplasty in body mass index (BMI) decrease and excess body weight loss one year later. However, vertical-banded gastroplasty had less operation time and complication than gastric bypass. Conclusion Gastric bypass treatment for obesity is better than vertical-banded gastroplasty in weight loss. But we should notice the complications after the gastric bypass.
