Abstract

New concept of measuring outcomes in oncology treatment-patient-centered outcomes ZHAN Wen-hua. Department of Surgery, the First Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510080, China Abstract Traditional clinical outcomes indexes are mortality, morbidity, survival and recurrence. It must develop concepts and measurement tools that more broadly and reliably capture factors that influence outcome and define a health from the patient perspective. Familiarity with patient centered outcomes is imperative. Most surgical oncologists are familiar with the concept of quality of life; however, there are other types of patient-centered outcomes that can be addressed such as patient preference, decision regret and patient satisfaction. The regret is seen as an emotional state of disappointment or sorrow. The measurement of patient preference often is linked tightly to patient education, decisionmaking analysis. Satisfaction is an outcome measure that is gaining importance as a measure of quality health care. It is currently used by some health organizations to help calculate a physicians income.
