Multidisciplinary approach to treatment for gastric cancer ZHAN Wen-hua. The First Hospital, SUN Yat-sen University, Guangzhou510080, China Abstract Gastric cancer is a worldwide healthy problem. Gastric cancer tended to be diagnosed late and typically is advanced at presentation. The mainstay of treatment for patients with gastric cancer is curative surgical resection, with emphasis on minimizing morbidity and mortality. Because of the high rate of locoregional and systemic recurrence with surgery alone, chemotherapy and radiation therapy have become integrated into the management of gastric cancer. The use as pre- or peri-operative treatments in particular has been validated by several recent clinical trials. Although exact treatment regimens may vary on a regional level, the data suggest that the multidisciplinary approach affords the best hope for improved outcomes in patients with gastric cancer.
