Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Xinqiao Hospital of the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing 400015, China Abstract The diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnosis method for intraabdominal diseases. The procedure enables (1) direct inspection of large surface areas of intraabdominal organs; (2) facilitate the acquisition of biopsy specimens, cultures, and aspirates; (3) allow the use of laparoscopic ultrasound; (4) make therapeutic intervention possible. Diagnostic laparoscopy has been applied for acute nonspecific abdominal pain, trauma, and acute abdomen in the critically ill patient at acute conditions.
