Abstract

Treatment of gynaecomastia ZHENG Xin-yu, WANG Shou-tao. Department of Breast Surgery, the First Afficiated Hospital of China Medical University, Shengyang 110001, China Abstract Gynaecomastia (GYN), a benign enlargement of the male breast as a result of proliferation of the glandular component, is common in neonates, adolescents and older men. It may be an incidental finding, and may or may not be associated with pain or tenderness. GYN should be firstly differentiated from“false gynecomastia” to avoid an unnecessary workup. A general medical history and careful physical examination should be given to find the drugs that have been linked to gynaecomastia and to rule out pathologic causes and breast cancer. Treatment depends on the cause and surgery may be necessary in cases lasting more than 1~2 years beyond the age of 17. The use of a combination of surgical excision and liposuction through a periareolar incision represents the surgical approach of choice.
