Abstract    Constipation consists of a large group of heterogeneous diseases, and the examination methods and diagnostic standard are not uniform and precise. Therefore, it is difficult to enforce high quality prospective clinical trails, which further leading to the great disparity in the surgical treatment of constipation. For some patients with severe constipation, the quality of life is improved after operation, but the incidences of recurrence and postoperative complication are extremely high. Moreover, the therapeutic effect can not be predicted by preoperative examination. For these reasons, surgical treatment should only be applied to a strictly selected group of constipation patients. These disputations concerning surgical treatment of constipation should be resolved by more detailed classification to minimize heterogeneity, and enforcing high quality prospective clinical trails with large sample.
