Abstract:It is difficult to have early diagnosis for skull base tumors, which is with nearly 100% delay in diagnosis. Because the skull base is located deeply with many important structures inside, routine biopsy is usually not feasible. Routine needle biopsy is not acceptable without image guidance, and may have the possibility of damaging important neurovascular structures. Needle biopsy under guidance of ultrasound or CT is not easily applied in clinical situation because of their own weaknesses. We have used navigation technique to handle tumors in the skull base since 2011 and had some experiences which will be presented with brief introduction of navigation technique.

Abstract: Objective The aim of the present study was to detect gene mutations of a familial non-syndromic oligodontia to provide insight into the role of AXIN2 in oligodontia phenotypes. Methods This research has been done in Central Laboratory of School of Stomatology,China Medical University. We investigated 17 individuals from a large three-generation Chinese family with non-syndromic oligodontia. They accepted to cooperate and signed the informed consent form. The experimental protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Committee of School of Stomatology, China Medical University. Genomic DNA was isolated from blood samples of the family.PCR primers for AXIN2 were designed with the Primer Premier 5.0 software. Purified PCR products were bi-directly sequenced with a 3730 DNA Analyzer. Results The non-syndrome oligodontia in the family was inherited in an autosome-dominant manner. One known missense mutation c.148C>T(rs2240308) that may have contributed to structural and functional changes of proteins was present in the AXIN2 coding region and three single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), including two known SNP c.1201+71(rs8078753), c.1201+100 (rs56248738) and one new SNP c.1201+100. Conclusion These data suggested a possible relationship between non-syndromic oligodontia and the SNPs of AXIN2 gene.

    Abstract ( )   PDF (865KB) ( )

Abstract: Due to the morphology of root canal systems, complete debridement and disinfection can't be done by traditional mechanical instrumentation and irrigants. Er∶YAG laser based irrigation may allow more conservative root canal preparation ,remove smear layer, open the dentinal tubules and disinfect more effectively while using conventional irrigants. Hence,it is used to reduce microleakage as the opening dentinal tubules facilitate the penetration of sealer and adhesives.Within a certain range of laser parameters, the apical extrusion of root canal irrigants will not occur while thermal influence on periapical tissue is minimal. So the application of Er∶YAG laser in root canal therapy enables the treatment to become simple, effective, and safe.
