Abstract: The occlusal plane is a core factor in orthodontic treatment and is closely associated with facial aesthetics and occlusal function. During orthodontic treatment，adjustments of the relationship between teeth position and dentoalveolar arch should be based on the position of occlusal plane. Therefore，proper guidance and control the growth direction and angle of the occlusal plane is of great significance for facial aesthetics，temporomandibular joint health，as well as soft and hard tissue and upper airway function. This article systematically elaborates on the definition and classification of the occlusal plane，including the anatomical occlusal plane，functional occlusal plane，maxillary occlusal plane，mandibular occlusal plane，anterior occlusal plane，posterior occlusal plane，and functional-aesthetic occlusal plane. It also discusses the influence of skeletal facial patterns and their growth modification on occlusal plane characteristics，along with the corresponding orthodontic regulation mechanisms，and analyzes the impacts of occlusal plane changes on patients′ facial profile，temporomandibular joints and upper airway，aiming to highlight the importance of occlusal plane control in orthodontic treatment.
