Abstract: Objective To study the influence of a telephone follow-up on patients′ conscious orthodontic pain and anxiety during invisible orthodontic treatment. Methods A total of 120 first-visit orthodontic patients who were wearing invisible orthodontic treatment from January 2021 to December 2021 in Department of Orthodontics,Hospital of Stomatology,Xi′an Jiaotong University, were randomly divided into the care phone group(n = 40),ordinary telephone group(n = 40)and control group(n = 40). Follow-up was made six hours after wearing the appliance. The care phone group received a telephone call demonstrating care or reassurance and offering guidance to their questions;the ordinary telephone group received an attention-only telephone call thanking them for participating in the study;the control group received no telephone call. Visual analogue scale(VAS)and generalized anxiety disorder(GAD-7)were used to evaluate the degree of pain and anxiety at 6 hours and 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 days after wearing the appliance. Results Four of 120 patients lost follow-up,including one in care phone group, one in ordinary phone group and two in control group. The loss of follow-up rate was 3.3% . At 6 hours and 1,2 and 3 days after wearing the appliance, there were significant differences in VAS scores in care phone group and ordinary phone group compared with the control group(P < 0.05). At 1,2,3,4 and 5 days after wearing the appliance, there were significant differences in GAD-7 scores in care phone group and ordinary phone group compared with the control group(P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in VAS and GAD-7 scores between care phone group and ordinary phone group at each time point(P > 0.05). Conclusion In the invisible orthodontic treatment, telephone call can reduce patients′ conscious pain and anxiety. However, the content of telephone follow-up may not affect the pain and anxiety of patients.
