Abstract:

Objective    To compare the shear bond strength of different base materials and veneering porcelain, and to propose basis for clinical rehabilitation choices of different ceramic restoration. Methods    A special mold was used for preparation of the wax pattern of base specimens, 60 in total. Cylindrical base specimens, 8 mm high and 6mm in diameter, were fabricated according to the manufacturer’s instructions, including Ni-Cr alloy, Co-Cr alloy, Au-Pd alloy, mixed Au-Pd alloy, casting ceramic and zirconia (n=10). The thickness of veneer ceramics was (2.0±0.01)mm over the transverse section of base specimens, and sintering strictly according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedures. The shear tests were performed in a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min, and the shear bond strength was recorded. The experimental data of shear bond strength were analyzed by One-way ANOVA. Results    The mean shear bond strength was:(51.56±8.93)MPa (Au-Pd alloy), (45.61±3.11)MPa (Ni-Cr alloy), (37.12±4.08)MPa (Co-Cr alloy), (36.07± 5.42)MPa (mixed precious group), (31.52±7.45)MPa (zirconia), and (29.62±9.97)MPa (casting ceramic). Results of One-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences between ceramic/alloy combination tested (P < 0.001). Conclusion    The results of this study indicate that the shear bond strength of different base materials and veneering porcelain are different. Porcelain fused to Au-Pd alloy and Ni-Cr alloy show maximum bonding strength.
