Abstract:

Objective    To study the difference of condylar morphology and symmetry of patients with scissors bite. Methods    A sample of 28 subjects [13 males, 15 females, aged 14 to 39 years, average age(19.64 ± 5.45 )years] with unilateral scissors bite was compared with a matched group of 28 subjects [10 males, 18 females, aged 14 to 38 years, average age(18.93 ± 5.13)years] with skeletal and dental Class I relationships. The panoramic radiographs were traced before orthodontic treatment and the analysis was taken by Adobe Photoshop software. Results    (1) No statistically signi?cant difference in sex-speci?c mandibular asymmetry was found between the two groups. (2) There was statistical difference in asymmetry index (upper condylar height) of the patients with scissors bite compared with the controls. Asymmetry index (ramus height, upper condylar-ramus height) was similar, and no statistically signi?cant difference was found. (3) There was no significant difference in the upper condylar height to the ramus height radio and the condylar height to the condylar neck width ratio between the two groups. Conclusion    Patients with scissors bite have asymmetrical condylar head, which suggests that early treatment should be taken as soon as possible.
