Abstract: It is an important task in the field of periodontology to train periodontists with high quality clinical diagnosis and treatment ability through postgraduate education. This paper summarized the teaching practice of more than 30 years on how to improve the clinical competence of postgraduate students majoring in periodontology，hoping to provide reference for exploring and promoting the cultivation of periodontal special talents in China. This paper points out that the clinical teaching of postgraduate students majoring in periodontology should conform to the characteristics and rules of periodontal clinical diagnosis and treatment，and introduces the general objective and quantitative index of clinical ability training for postgraduate students in periodontology of Peking University Hospital of Stomatology. Meanwhile，the methods to improve the clinical competence were introduced from five aspects：standardized training of residents，periodontal specialized ability stage training mode，observation of tutor′s clinical practice，literature class and case discussion class.
