Abstract: Tongue is an important part of the mouth. Movements of the tongue are regulated by the hypoglossal nerve. Any damage to the hypoglossal nerve will lead to abnormal movements of the tongue. Abnormal tongue movements include tongue deviation，tongue tremor，involuntary tongue extension and difficulty in tongue extension，which may affect eating and speech. In severe cases，dyspnea may occur due to the retraction of the tongue. The patients with abnormal tongue movements may go to a dental clinic first when they seek for medical help. Therefore，it is very important for the dentists to be aware of the causes of abnormal tongue movements. In this paper，the causes of abnormal tongue movements and their relationship with systemic diseases were reviewed.
