Abstract: Minimally invasive treatment of periodontal disease is the commonly available method characterized by minor trauma，low risk，and rapid recovery. Compared with traditional mechanical therapy，an adjunctive or alternative therapy of laser has many advantages and has become one area of recent interest and development. This review focuses on the working principle and biological role of common periodontal laser device，including its effects on the removal of plaque and dental calculus，its impact on regeneration for periodontal tissue，its role in pain control，the research progress and future directions of laser in the diagnosis，prevention，and treatment of periodontal diseases，aiming to provide new insights into the further clinical application.
