Abstract    Partial hepatectomy remains the main curative treatment strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Unfortunately，the majority of patients are diagnosed at a late stage，and they miss the chance of curative surgery. Recently，there have been increasing number of reported studies on the methods to increase HCC resectability.Associating liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) is a new surgical technique which results in a marked enlargement of the future liver remnant (FLR) within a short time. When ALPPS is compared to the conventional technique of preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE)，or intraoperative portal vein ligation (PVL)，ALPPS has a faster growth rate in the FLR within a shorter time. However，ALPPS has been reported to have high perioperative morbidity and mortality rates. Surgeons should be cautions in the use of ALPPS to treat HCC patients.
