Abstract: Objective This clinical study is aimed to discuss the treatment and its prognosis of arthocentesis for acute TMJ disk displacement without reduction. Methods From May 2006 to May 2007， 8 cases of acute TMJ disk displacement without reduction，including 1 male and 7 females， with an average age of 26.9 years， were referred to our department. All patients presented a history of TMJ clicking of various durations， and complained of limited month opening and TMJ pain within a week. Arthrocentesis was performed via a preauricular percutaneous method， with a mixture of lidocaine and vitamin B12， once per day for 3 days. The average follow-up period was 3.2 months （range， 1～15 months）. Results Pain of all patients have got relief or disappeared in greater degree after treatment, and mouth opening had great improvement. Mouth opening of 26 patients returned to normal, but 17 patients still had symptoms of clicking in joints. The total effective rates were 92.86%. Conclusion Arthocentesis is quite useful for acute TMJ disk displacement without reduction.
